A Tribute to Judith Burganger

(1939-2024)

A Distinguished American Concert Pianist, Pedagogue, and Member of AAPF

Judith began her musical studies at the age of 4 and accelerated her studies under several renowned pianists, playing over 30 times with the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Toronto Symphony plus several times with the National Symphony in Constitution Hall while still a teenager. Before graduation Judith was chosen 1st Place winner in the National Merriweather Post Competition in Washington, D.C.

Following high school, Judith went abroad to study at the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart, Germany. In 1965 she became the first American and the first pianist in six years to win First Prize in the ARD International Piano Competition in Munich. Judith has toured widely throughout Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan, and with her husband and Duo partner, Leonid Treer, in the People's Republic of China. She rose to international acclaim through solo and concerto performances, playing with prominent conductors and major orchestras such as The Cleveland Orchestra, The Chicago Symphony, and venues like Carnegie Hall and Library of Congress. Judith's 30-year teaching career includes professorships at Carnegie Mellon University, Texas Tech University, and Florida Atlantic University where she holds the title of Professor Emerita. During her teaching career, she has designed and developed undergraduate and graduate programs for students majoring in piano performance, chamber music and pedagogy. In 1985 Judith created the FAU Chamber Soloists and became it's Artistic Director. At that time, she and Leonid became a Duo Piano team which also performed in concerts with the FAU Chamber Soloists performing all major works with piano, strings and winds. Included is a unique 24 year cycle of all the chamber music of the great Johannes Brahms.
